Abstract

The use of figure of speech such as metaphor in the novel is one of the primary factors to beautify the content, phrase, and sentence of the story. Figure of speech is the usage of words in analogical meaning. It is a use of a word that diverges from its normal meaning or a phrase with a specialized meaning not based on the literal meaning of the words in it such as a metaphor, simile, or personification. Figure of speech often provide emphasis, freshness of expression, or clarity. We can use it to take something simple or flat and transform it into something multi-dimensional. Figurative language has the ability to be more impactful than literal writing; it can expand reader’s interpretations and broaden their imaginings. Basically the use of figure of speech in the novel is reflections of characteristic and character of the authors to express their idea in writing. The use of figure of speech has some purposes, such as to enhance the author’s creation, influence the readers by what were written down in the literature works and to involve the readers to the story they read. Based on that statement above, the writer conducted a research. That is An Analysis of Metaphor Translation Method in Dickens’, Great Expectations Based on Newmark Theory. In this research the writer has some problems. Those are how to find the metaphors, what the meaning and feature of metaphors in the novel, and how many kind of Newmark’s translation methods that is often used by the translator. So, the writer gives the limitation by only discussing the meaning and features of metaphors in Dickens’, Great Expectations. The significance of the research is to expand the knowledge of the readers by giving suggestion about the metaphor. In the research, the writer uses the qualitative method. It is a method that solves an actual problem by collecting the data, clarifying the data, analysing the data, and interpreting the data. The main data that the writer analyses in the research is the sentence of phrase of the novel. Based on the research, the writer finds that the metaphors is used in the novel. The writer finds 216 metaphors, but he only chooses randomly 53 metaphors to be analysed. After the writer analyses the data, the meaning, the features of the metaphors, and how many the kind of Newmark’s translation method that is used by the translator in the novel. It is found that the data are appropriate with the Newmark’s theories. According to Keraf (1994), metaphor is an analogy that compares two matters directly without using the words like or as, but in a brief form. So, the author has succeeded in using the metaphors in his novel. Key words : metaphor, translation, figure of speech, Newmark’s translation methods.
