Abstract

The research is entitled “ An Analysis of Protagonist and Antagonist Characters Carroll’s Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland ”. The purpose of this research is to find out the protagonist and antagonist characters and also to find out how the author describe the characterizations of the characters. Plot, setting, and characters are the important elements that the writer use for thi s research. Using Freytag’s Pyramid to analyze the plot and Minderop’s theory to analyze the characters. t he writer chose and limit it only for seven characters based on the plot result and how they affect the main character. The characterizations are desc ribed with both direct and indirect method. The writer found that each of seven characters has various characteristics which means that there are no character that only has protagonist or either anta gonist characteristics. The obs t a cle in doing this research is that a character can be having a complex characteristics so the writer must carefully sorting each of their characteristics. As for the conclusion, the result is that the characters in the story are categorized into protagonist and antagonist c haracters based on the character’s dominant trait, and in term of good/evil personalities. The result of categorizing the characters is that Alice as the main character is the protagonist , but also the Cheshire Cat and the Caterpillar are the protagonist t oo because of their dominant traits and how they helped the main character to get through her problems. While the antagonist are the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare and the White Rabbit. They are considered as the protagonist because they h as bad or evil personalities and try to harm or hurt the main character.
