Abstract

12 Years A Slave is a historical film that tells of the journey of a black man named Solomon Northup, a free man to be free from slavery and gain his independence again. This film presents the brutality of the white slavery system in the form of physical and psychological violence. This reopened the dark history of the United States, the film was successfully won the award for Best Film Oscar 2014. This study aims to describe the forms of white racism against blacks represented by visual and linguistic symbols in the 12 Years a Slave film. This research is included in qualitative descriptive study with semiotic analysis approach. The subject of this research is a 12 Years A Slave film while the analysis unit is a snippet of images contained in the 12 Years A Slave film that is related to the research focus. This study was conducted by collecting data through observation, interview (in this case the researchers interviewed one expert informant and two viewers from this film), and the documentation which was analyzed using Roland Berthes semiotics theory that analyzed the denotation, connotation and mythic meanings Piece scene. The results of this study indicate that the representation of blacks and whites is very contradictory. White people are described as first class people who have a prosperous life while blacks are slaves who work for whites. The white figure as a superior race while the black race as a weak and powerless race without the help of whites. It is hoped that in the future films will be able to present many stories that are more instructive and also full of meaning from various aspects of life as well as reflection on themselves that can make the audience become a better individual
