Abstract

This research paper is entitled “The Use of Neighborhood Walk Technique to Improve Students’ Speaking Skill”. This study was intended to find out whether the use of neighborhood walk technique was effective or not for improving students’ speaking ability. It was aimed at investigating the students’ responses toward the use of neighborhood walk technique used for teaching speaking. The method of the research was quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test nonequivalent. The participants of the study were two classes of second grade students of SMPN 1 Ciparay, VII J and VII I those were the control group and experimental group. The instruments of the research that were applied were pretest, post-test, questionnaires and the treatment was implemented and was administered to the experimental group. The data from the pre-test and post-test were analyzed by using SPSS 23 for Windows. The data from questionnaires were analyzed by using a Likert Scale. In addition, df=38 with the level significance at 0.05 is 2.024 (see on the t table on appendix) and the value obtained is 4.464. It means that the tobtain > tcritical (4.464 > 2.024), therefoe the null hypothesis was rejected. It indicated that there was difference between the experimental and the control group score after treatments. Furthermore, the result of questionnaires showed that the most of students gave positive responses toward the use of neighborhood walk technique in teaching speaking. It can be concluded that teaching speaking using neighborhood walk technique can make the students feel more fun, enjoy and attractive in the class. Therefore, neighborhood walk technique is not only for improving students’ speaking ability but also enjoyable and attractive in the class.
