Abstract
The topic discussed in this paper is “Contextual Teaching and Learning Approach to Teaching Writing” .CTL is one of techniques that can help students improve their ability. Using CTL technique also can help the teacher to find out the progress of the students’ ability. In this paper the objective of the research is to know the teacher’s procedure in teaching writing using CTL, to know the students’ writing improvement in using CTL and to know the students’ respond towards teaching writing in using CTL. This research applied the qualitative method. The participant of this research is the students of third grade in SMP Indonesia Raya Bandung and the total number of the sample is 15 students. The technique used in collecting the data were classroom observation, pre-test and post-test, and questionnaire. The Students were gave the descriptive subject to be asked to make the descriptive works. The research observed the roles of the teacher. Teacher taught students by using Contextual Teaching and Learning technique. The students did pre-test and post test to complete the answers of the research question. The result of classroom observation, pre-test and post-test, and also questionnaire were interpreted by the writer, it helps the readers and can find out that this technique is successfully used in teaching learning process. The result shows that teaching writing by using Contextual Teaching and Learning is effective to improve students’ writing. This can be seen from the result of post-test, it shows that the class after was given treatment using Contextual Teaching and Learning got higher score than control class without Contextual Teaching and Learning. Based on total the result of pre-test and post-test, there is real difference between results of study of learning using CTL that is 157.4 and learning that is not using CTL that is 95.7 Consequently, learning writing text using CTL is more effective when it is applied in the process of learning English than the non CTL. However, the writer could not deny that the difference score between teaching by using CTL and teaching without using CTL is not much. But the writing improvement in the research has proven that Contextual Teaching and Learning technique can be a good technique in developing writing ability.
